This is important to ensure that web pages render consistently across different browser, such as Internet Explorer 6 & 7, Safari and Firefox. Using correct semantic coding also has a positive effect regarding search engines. Search engines will be able to read valid pages without errors, and are therefore more likely to index your content properly, rather than missing vital content.
